The Mom Hack Every Picky Eater Needs

August 11, 2025

As a mom and a former indoor cook for a Montessori preschool, I’ve experienced the challenge of children navigating their eating habits. It’s completely normal for kids to be hesitant about foods like greens, nuts, fish, and legumes. However, there are many constructive strategies to introduce these nutritious ingredients into their meals in a way that encourages acceptance and enjoyment. By approaching food creatively and positively, we can help children appreciate a wider range of healthy options.

One effective approach is to disguise foods that children may not favour by blending them into sauces they enjoy. For instance, many kids love tomato sauce, which can serve as a great base for adding healthier ingredients. Making your own sauce at home is the best option, as it allows you to control the ingredients.

Here are some practical recipe ideas to consider:

1. **Bolognese Sauce**: If your children enjoy Bolognese, cook the greens they usually avoid separately. Blend these cooked greens with fresh herbs, then mix them into the Bolognese sauce. This way, they gain the nutritional benefits without even realising it.

2. **Burgers**: When making burgers, you can take a similar approach. Instead of pre-cooking the greens, blend them raw, then drain the excess juice using a colander. This preparation will allow you to incorporate them into the burger patties seamlessly.

3.**Soups are nutritious **: You can make amazing recipes made from legumes without incorporating any protein because all types of legumes are an excellent source of protein while taking a similar approach.

By using these techniques, you can help ensure that your kids are getting a balanced diet while also enjoying meals they love.
